German Government to Limit Disclosures on Ukraine Arms Deliveries

The German government has announced a new approach regarding the disclosure of military aid to Ukraine, signaling a shift towards greater confidentiality. This decision follows comments from Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who advocated for a more cautious discussion surrounding specific weapon systems.

On Monday, government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius confirmed that the administration would refrain from providing detailed information about individual weapons systems, including the Taurus cruise missiles. Kornelius stated that the government would no longer comment on such specifics, citing tactical reasons for this decision.

The Ministry of Defense emphasized that while general information about the types of weapons and ammunition being supplied would still be communicated, finer details--such as the number of specific guided missiles--would not be disclosed. This approach is intended to prevent the Russian military from gaining insight into the capabilities of Ukrainian defenses, as such information could potentially aid in their strategic planning.

Kornelius highlighted that the sharing of specific details with the public does not serve the interests of Ukraine's defense. He noted that this strategy aligns with practices observed by other European nations in similar contexts.

Regarding the Taurus missiles specifically, Kornelius reiterated Germany's commitment to providing military support to Ukraine. However, he clarified that the government would not disclose the particulars of that support. The Taurus missile, which is launched from combat aircraft, reportedly has a range of approximately 500 kilometers and is equipped with advanced targeting systems that utilize terrain data, infrared sensors, and GPS.

Ukraine has persistently requested the delivery of Taurus missiles, a demand that was previously rejected by former Chancellor Olaf Scholz due to concerns about escalating tensions. In contrast, Chancellor Merz has openly supported the idea of supplying these weapons.

The Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, expressed satisfaction with the new government's decision to treat arms deliveries as classified information. He remarked that strategic planning requires discretion and that he is privy to the necessary details regarding Germany's military support to Ukraine.

However, this shift has drawn criticism from some German lawmakers, including Omid Nouripour of the Green Party, who reminded that Merz had previously called for expedited deliveries of the Taurus missiles. Nouripour reiterated the urgent need for these weapon systems in Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of timely assistance to support the country in its defense efforts.

As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, the German government's strategy regarding military aid will likely remain a focal point in discussions about international support for the embattled nation.
