Germany and France Deny Drug Abuse Rumors Following Kyiv Visit

Tue 13th May, 2025
The governments of Germany and France have officially dismissed rumors circulating on social media that suggested French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had engaged in drug use while traveling to Ukraine. A spokesperson from the German government labeled the claims as 'absurd,' while a representative from the French government condemned the allegations as part of a disinformation campaign propagated by conspiracy theorists. During their recent visit to Ukraine, which also included British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the two leaders found themselves at the center of unfounded speculation. Allegations arose claiming that Macron had hidden a bag of cocaine in his train compartment just before a scheduled photo opportunity. However, evidence from the scene revealed that what was being misrepresented as illegal substances was, in fact, a tissue. Similarly, Merz was accused of concealing a spoon purportedly intended for drug use. Upon closer examination of video footage, it became clear that the object in question was merely a stirrer for drinks or a small skewer for appetizers, contradicting the sensational narratives being shared online. These rumors gained traction on a website that bears a striking resemblance to one identified as part of a Russian disinformation network. The claims were further amplified by Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, and disseminated by Alex Jones, a prominent figure in the U.S. conspiracy theory community. In response to the allegations, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party stated on social media that the object in Merz's possession was simply a tissue, emphasizing the ongoing attempts to manipulate public opinion through disinformation tactics. They warned that adversaries of democracy are actively working to undermine European unity and societal cohesion. The British government also expressed its concerns regarding the spread of false information, noting the uncertain origins of these claims. A spokesperson mentioned that similar attempts to mislead the public have been observed in the past, particularly from Russian sources, which have become increasingly desperate in their messaging amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
