Germany Detains Shadow Fleet Tanker Following Baltic Incident

Thu 16th Jan, 2025

In the aftermath of a maritime incident in the Baltic Sea, German authorities have detained the oil tanker Eventin, believed to be part of Russia's shadow fleet. This vessel, which ran aground off the coast of Rügen on January 10, has faced scrutiny regarding the origin of its oil cargo, which amounts to 99,000 tons.

As the vessel awaits further inspection, the German customs officials are conducting a thorough investigation into the tanker's cargo documentation to ascertain compliance with existing oil embargoes. Reports indicate that samples of the oil have been taken for analysis, with the Eventin registered under the Panamanian flag but suspected of operating under Russian directives to circumvent sanctions imposed by Western nations.

Following the grounding of the Eventin, which has regained power to its main engine, the captain requested permission to leave port. However, German authorities have mandated that the ship remain anchored for the time being, with two ocean-going tugs stationed nearby to monitor the situation.

Several investigations are currently underway, including an assessment of the ship's technical readiness, conducted by Det Norske Veritas, a maritime classification society akin to a vehicle inspection authority. The German Ministry of Transport has issued a temporary prohibition on the ship's departure until all relevant documentation and findings are reviewed.

In light of increasing concerns regarding national security, including allegations of espionage and sabotage linked to vessels within the shadow fleet, calls for the comprehensive examination and detention of the Eventin have intensified. Maritime security expert Moritz Brake highlighted the importance of such measures, especially following incidents like the damage caused by another suspected shadow fleet tanker, the Eagle S, to an undersea cable between Finland and Estonia in late 2024.

Additionally, the safety of the crew members and the potential environmental impacts of such vessels have raised alarms among authorities. Environmental watchdog Greenpeace has identified the Eventin in its listings of shadow fleet vessels, indicating concerns regarding automatic identification system discrepancies and other operational red flags.

On January 14, Baltic Sea nations convened in Helsinki to discuss enhanced security measures in the region. The proposed mission, dubbed Baltic Sentry, aims to deter hostile activities using a combination of naval forces, reconnaissance aircraft, and drones. Coordination of Germany's involvement in this initiative is set to be managed from Rostock.
