Germany Plans to Extend Border Checks Amid Increased Migration

In response to a significant influx of migrants arriving in Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta, the German government has announced intentions to prolong internal border controls with neighboring countries. The Interior Minister stated that the current measures, which were initially introduced to address growing migration pressures, are to be maintained beyond their previously established deadline.

Since September 2024, Germany has been conducting systematic checks at all of its external borders within the European Union. This policy, originally implemented to manage unauthorized entry, has been reviewed and extended multiple times by successive administrations. The latest extension was set to expire in mid-September 2026; however, authorities now indicate that controls will continue for an undetermined period.

The decision comes as regional authorities in Ceuta reported the arrival of approximately 60,000 migrants from neighboring Morocco over recent days. According to Spain's Interior Ministry, about 25,000 individuals have already returned to Morocco, while others remain in the enclave. Reports also highlight tragic circumstances, with at least 34 people losing their lives during attempts to reach Ceuta.

The German Interior Ministry emphasized the necessity of adapting border measures to the evolving migration situation. Officials argue that flexible and targeted controls are essential for maintaining the progress made in reducing irregular migration and for strengthening overall border management. No specific end date for these controls has yet been provided.

In parallel, Germany has urged Spain to take comprehensive action to reinforce external European Union borders. The call includes appeals for the prompt return of migrants arriving in Ceuta to their countries of origin, particularly Morocco. German authorities stressed that effective cooperation among EU member states is crucial to manage migration flows and uphold security within the Schengen Area.
