Despite Economic Challenges, Germans Increase Travel Spending

Mon 3rd Mar, 2025

The enthusiasm for travel among Germans remains strong, even amid economic downturns. At the opening of the International Tourism Fair (ITB) in Berlin, the President of the German Travel Association (DRV) emphasized that despite various economic and geopolitical challenges, the desire to travel persists.

According to DRV data, the revenue for the summer season from May to October 2025 has increased by 12% compared to the previous year, accompanied by a 6% rise in the number of travelers. For the entire tourism year from November 2024 to October 2025, an overall revenue increase of 11% and a 4% rise in travelers are projected. Notably, Germans are booking their summer vacations earlier than before, with early bookings becoming the new norm.

Last year marked a record in travel expenditure, with Germans spending a total of EUR83.4 billion on pre-booked trips, reflecting a 5.6% increase from the prior year. The most significant growth for summer 2025 is observed in package tours to Eastern Mediterranean destinations, cruises, and long-haul trips. Package holidays have seen a 6% increase in popularity, with Turkey leading the way, generating approximately EUR1.2 billion in bookings.

In addition to traditional favorites like Spain and Greece, which also brought in around EUR1.2 billion and EUR1 billion, respectively, more economical travel options such as Tunisia, Bulgaria, and Egypt are among the top ten destinations for German travelers. The DRV noted that while spending might be tighter during these challenging times, it is reflected in the choice of travel destinations.

Albania is emerging as a popular choice among travelers, boasting a remarkable growth rate of 36% for the summer season. Although its current revenue levels are lower compared to other Mediterranean nations, its popularity is rising, particularly as it serves as the partner country for the ITB event.

The data presented is derived from the revenues of traditional travel agencies and classic online booking platforms, encompassing all bookings made by the end of January 2025. Notably, this excludes reservations made through call centers or platforms like Booking.com and Airbnb.
