Dresden - A significant operation against a notorious fraud ring known as the Nigeria-Connection has resulted in the arrest of four individuals across Italy, the Netherlands, and Germany. These suspects are alleged to have defrauded numerous victims through elaborate schemes involving fake identities as soldiers and doctors.
The accused, who are asylum seekers, are now facing trial in a large-scale case at the Dresden District Court. According to prosecutors, the group met in Palermo, Sicily, and orchestrated multiple scams targeting unsuspecting individuals.
One notable victim, a woman from Saxony, reportedly lost a staggering EUR422,000 to the scam network, of which the defendants are believed to have received EUR35,000. The victim fell for a scheme involving a fabricated military officer who claimed to be sending a package containing important documents. When complications arose, purported customs and legal fees were requested, prompting her to make additional payments.
In a particularly shocking twist, another victim from Dresden continued to send money even after the scam was exposed. This woman became infatuated with a fraudulent doctor named Dr. Daniel Steven and believed she was engaged to him. Despite the revelation of the scam, she transferred nearly EUR24,000 to him. The presiding judge noted that she remains convinced of his existence and continues to send money after giving testimony in court.
The trend of love scams is on the rise, with increasing numbers of individuals falling prey to such deception. The police have issued warnings about the growing sophistication of these fraud schemes, which often involve online interactions that can lead to significant financial losses.
The four defendants are reported to be intermediaries with accounts in Germany, Italy, and Lithuania where the fraudulent funds were deposited. As the prosecution outlined the case, the list of victims was so extensive that the lead prosecutor required a break to continue reading it.
One of the accused, Hamsik E. (24), who was living in Amsterdam, was arrested there and extradited. Precious O. (25), an assistant waitress, and Ayomide N. (25), reportedly unemployed, were brought from Sicily. Sylvester E. (27), who claims to be a fashion designer, was apprehended in North Rhine-Westphalia. The prosecution is seeking the forfeiture of EUR167,000, EUR71,000, EUR55,000, and EUR115,000 from each of the defendants, raising questions about the potential recovery of funds from them.
