The newly appointed German Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, is set to embark on his inaugural visit to the United States this week. Scheduled for Wednesday, May 28, Wadephul will engage in discussions in Washington, D.C., where he is expected to meet with his American counterpart, Marco Rubio. Emphasizing the importance of a robust transatlantic partnership, Wadephul noted that such relationships are vital for addressing global challenges.
According to a spokesperson, Wadephul will depart for the U.S. on the evening of May 27. This visit comes at the invitation of Rubio and aims to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in light of the ongoing Ukraine conflict and the security and defense policies shared between Europe and the United States. The agenda will also cover Middle East policy and trade relations between the EU and the U.S.
Wadephul, in his remarks made during a recent visit to Madrid, asserted that the dialogues between Germany, Europe, and the U.S. reflect a commitment to maintaining strong connections. He stated, "We recognize on both sides of the Atlantic that we can only tackle significant challenges together."
While the specifics of other meetings during Wadephul's visit remain uncertain, his spokesperson indicated that potential discussions could include the contentious issue surrounding the ban on German and other foreign students at Harvard University.
This visit by Wadephul precedes a planned trip to Washington by the new German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, who has expressed his intent to visit the U.S. soon. However, the exact date of Merz's visit has not been confirmed yet. There seems to be an air of caution regarding Merz's upcoming engagements with U.S. President Donald Trump, as evidenced by his recent interactions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome, where he sought her advice for his first meeting with Trump.
During her response, Meloni humorously remarked that she does not see herself as a "psychologist for international leaders," further indicating that Merz, with his considerable political experience, is well-equipped for the task at hand.
Merz may, however, receive insights on navigating his future discussions with Trump during the upcoming Nordic summit, where he will hold bilateral conversations with Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and President Alexander Stubb. Stubb is noted for his amicable relationship with Trump, having even played golf at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, and could provide valuable advice for Merz.
The initial contact between Merz and Trump occurred shortly after Merz took office, with a phone call that reportedly focused on resolving trade disputes and fostering collaboration to end the conflict in Ukraine. Despite initial positive exchanges, there has been notable inconsistency in Trump's approach to Ukraine, oscillating between support for Ukraine and expressions of backing for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In light of recent controversies involving Trump and other world leaders, Merz appears to be preparing diligently for his U.S. visit. Wadephul's discussions with Rubio may serve as a precursor to shaping future relations between Berlin and Washington, indicating a keen interest in fostering dialogue and cooperation amidst global political complexities.
