German Delegation Attends Moscow Victory Celebrations to Advocate for Ceasefire

As Moscow prepares to commemorate the 80th anniversary of its victory over Nazi Germany, two members of the European Parliament from the political alliance led by Sahra Wagenknecht will be participating in the festivities on May 9. The representatives, Michael von der Schulenburg and Ruth Firmenich, have announced their intention to attend the commemorative events in the Russian capital.

Following their visit to Moscow, the delegation plans to travel to Kyiv, where they are already in contact with the Ukrainian embassy to facilitate their visit. The lawmakers aim to engage in discussions with political and cultural figures during their stay in Moscow, which is strategically timed to coincide with a declared ceasefire period.

In a statement regarding their trip, the representatives emphasized their goal of promoting lasting peace in Ukraine, stating that their presence at the celebrations serves as a gesture towards achieving this aim. They are part of a larger group that includes lawmakers from the Czech Republic, Cyprus, and Slovakia, collectively advocating for a cessation of hostilities in the region.

The Russian government, led by President Vladimir Putin, has mandated a three-day ceasefire to coincide with the Victory Day celebrations, a significant event marked by a military parade in Moscow. In stark contrast, Ukrainian officials have called for a ceasefire of at least 30 days to ensure safety and stability in the region.

During the military parade, it is expected that 29 foreign leaders and officials, along with soldiers from 13 different nations, will attend. Notably, Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to arrive in Moscow for a four-day state visit, underscoring the event's international significance.

As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, the participation of these European lawmakers in Russia's Victory Day celebrations highlights the complex diplomatic relations and the ongoing discourse surrounding peace efforts in the region.
