In a significant achievement for the German film industry, costume designer Lisy Christl has secured a vital accolade in Hollywood. This recognition comes just weeks ahead of the Oscars, where Edward Berger's Vatican thriller, Konklave, has garnered eight nominations, including Best Film and Best Costume Design.

Lisy Christl, originally from Munich, was honored at the Costume Designers Guild Awards (CDGA), winning in the category for Contemporary Film. She triumphed over other notable nominees from films such as Challengers, Emilia Pérez, The Fall Guy, and The Substance.

This year marks the 27th edition of the CDGA, which celebrates excellence in costume design for film and television. Historically, winners of the CDGA often go on to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design, raising expectations for Christl as the Oscar ceremony approaches on March 2.

Alongside Konklave, other films in contention for the prestigious Oscar include Wicked, which won in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy category at the CDGA, and Nosferatu, the winner in the Historical Film category. The competition also features A Complete Unknown and the anticipated Gladiator II.

Berger's film, Konklave, has not only received acclaim for its storytelling but also for its artistic presentation, with nominations for adapted screenplay, original score by Volker Bertelmann, and a nod for Ralph Fiennes as Best Actor, in addition to Christl's work in costume design.

Lisy Christl, aged 60, previously received an Oscar nomination in 2012 for her costume work in Roland Emmerich's historical drama Anonymus. Although she did not win that year, she was awarded the Lola at the German Film Awards. Her recent success at the CDGA has reignited hopes for an Oscar win this time around.
