Trial Begins for Gérard Depardieu Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

Mon 24th Mar, 2025

The long-anticipated trial of renowned French actor Gérard Depardieu has commenced, focusing on serious allegations of sexual misconduct brought forth by two women. The proceedings, which are set to unfold over two days, are taking place at a criminal court in Paris and could result in significant penalties for the 76-year-old actor if found guilty.

Depardieu faces accusations of inappropriate behavior, which reportedly occurred during the filming of "Les volets verts" (The Green Shutters) in 2021. One of the plaintiffs, a decorator, claims that the actor assaulted her in a corridor, making obscene comments while inappropriately touching her. She formally filed a complaint in February 2024, citing sexual assault, harassment, and sexist remarks. The second complainant, a production assistant, has also accused Depardieu of similar misconduct on set, alleging that he had previously harassed her before the incidents in question.

This trial has been marked by delays, the most recent being attributed to health concerns surrounding Depardieu, who has battled diabetes for over 25 years and underwent a quadruple bypass surgery. The court has imposed restrictions on the length of sessions, ensuring that each does not exceed six hours and includes mandatory 15-minute breaks.

Depardieu has enlisted the services of prominent defense attorney Jérémie Assous, known for his controversial approach in high-profile cases. Assous has previously succeeded in delaying the trial and maintains that the allegations against his client are baseless, asserting that there are no direct witnesses to the alleged incidents.

The actor, celebrated for his extensive film career, including roles in classics like "Cyrano de Bergerac" and "Asterix and Obelix," has faced a barrage of similar accusations over the years. Notably, in 2018, actress Charlotte Arnould accused him of sexual assault, leading to an ongoing investigation that has yet to reach a conclusion.

The outcome of this trial is expected to draw considerable public and media attention, not only due to Depardieu's celebrity status but also because it highlights ongoing societal discussions regarding sexual misconduct in the film industry.
