Fruit Growers Report Lesser Frost Damage Compared to Last Year

Mon 7th Apr, 2025

In early April 2024, frost caused significant destruction to fruit orchards across Germany. However, the initial frost this April has resulted in comparatively minor damage, primarily due to its earlier onset compared to last year.

According to preliminary assessments, the recent frosts have inflicted less harm than those in 2024. The head of the fruit cultivation association noted that the current situation is not comparable to the devastating impacts experienced last year when late April frosts destroyed entire harvests.

While frost was reported nationwide, the flower buds are still in a stage that is more resilient to cold temperatures. Damage to peach and apricot crops is anticipated, though these fruits represent a smaller portion of overall production. The extent of damage to apples, cherries, and plums remains uncertain.

To mitigate risks to their crops, fruit growers are employing irrigation systems and warm air blowers. The German Weather Service forecasts light frost for the upcoming night, with regions in the northeast, coastal areas, and various urban centers in western and southwestern Germany expected to remain frost-free. Anticipated temperatures could dip between 0 and minus 4 degrees Celsius.
