French Prime Minister Lecornu Resigns Amid Political Turmoil

Mon 6th Oct, 2025

Prime Minister Lecornu has submitted his resignation, citing a lack of cooperation among the political parties in the fragmented French Parliament. He expressed frustration over the ongoing deadlock, stating that parties are behaving as if they hold an absolute majority in the National Assembly. Lecornu indicated that despite his willingness to compromise, each political faction insists that others adopt their entire agenda, which has hindered progress.

The resignation comes on the heels of a governmental crisis exacerbated by a scramble among parties for positions within the cabinet. Lecornu's government was recently formed, with many ministers being carryovers from the previous administration, a decision that drew significant criticism. Notably, only two key cabinet posts were newly appointed: Roland Lescure as Minister of Economy and Finance, and Bruno Le Maire, who was controversially assigned to lead the Ministry of Defense. This appointment particularly raised eyebrows, as the conservative factions threatened to withdraw from the coalition, demanding a third of the ministerial roles.

As it stands, the coalition government, which comprises the conservative Républicains and President Macron's centrist party, lacks a parliamentary majority. Lecornu was scheduled to present his government statement and budget proposal the following Tuesday, aimed at reducing France's national debt through austerity measures. However, his predecessor, François Bayrou, had already failed in this endeavor, losing a confidence vote after just nine months in office.

With Lecornu's departure, President Macron now faces the challenge of appointing a new Prime Minister for the third time this year. Alternatively, he may consider dissolving Parliament and calling for new elections, a move that could reshape the political landscape in France.
