A former employee of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation has been charged with bribery after allegedly steering contracts to a roofing company in exchange for financial compensation. The Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office has filed charges against the 57-year-old man for bribery in 16 separate instances, with the case set to be heard at the Tiergarten District Court.

According to the prosecution, between 2015 and 2018, the accused colluded with a now-deceased master roofer to favor his company during the contract awarding process. In return for this preferential treatment, the former employee reportedly demanded payments totaling EUR56,200, with individual bribes ranging from EUR500 to EUR16,000 per contract. The prosecution claims that he received at least EUR35,800 of these sums.

The charges allege that the former employee willfully violated procurement laws and his professional duties. The accused has denied the allegations against him. The Foundation filed a complaint in 2020 after the misconduct came to light, leading to the current legal proceedings.

The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation has characterized the charges as a significant development. A spokesperson stated that following internal investigations that uncovered the wrongdoing, the Foundation took appropriate action, which included notifying antitrust authorities and filing criminal complaints against both the employee and several companies involved.

This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding integrity within public institutions and the adherence to legal standards in contract awarding. The foundation's swift response underlines its commitment to maintaining ethical practices and accountability in its operations.
