Flight Prices from Germany Remain High Amid Reduced Services

Mon 3rd Mar, 2025

Traveling by air from Germany continues to be an expensive endeavor, with fewer flights available and increased fees expected for the upcoming summer season. The ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to many routes being cut, resulting in a significant reduction in flight offerings.

According to a recent report presented at the ITB Berlin tourism fair, Germany is experiencing a reduction of 18.1% in the number of flights scheduled for July compared to the same month in 2019, the year before the pandemic. Although this marks a 3.0% increase compared to the previous year, the overall number of flights remains considerably lower than pre-crisis levels.

Experts indicate that the combination of reduced flight availability and rising operational costs will likely lead to higher ticket prices. Germany is ranked among the more expensive European countries for air travel, primarily due to high government fees and taxes.

The dynamic pricing model used by airlines complicates ticket price comparisons, as costs fluctuate based on factors such as aircraft occupancy and the timing of bookings. Recent statements from airline executives suggest a potential increase in average ticket prices of 4% to 6%.

Despite the challenges in the aviation sector, demand for flights to popular tourist destinations remains strong. In fact, flights to Mallorca from Germany are projected to exceed those to France, with over 3,500 flights to Mallorca scheduled in July alone, compared to approximately 2,700 flights to the entire country of France.

Notably, domestic flights have seen the largest reductions, particularly under the near-monopoly of Lufthansa, which now operates only about half of its former routes. The primary international destinations for German travelers continue to be Spain, Turkey, Italy, and Greece, with Palma de Mallorca being the most frequented airport.

While Lufthansa remains the airline with the most extensive flight offerings this summer, other carriers such as Eurowings, Ryanair, and Condor are also contributing to the market.
