Munich - A small fire had significant repercussions for train services in the region. Around 3:20 AM, the German railway operator, Deutsche Bahn, alerted the federal police regarding a blaze at a cable shaft in Munich-Obermenzing. By the time railway technicians arrived, the fire had already been extinguished. Initial reports indicate that eight cables were damaged, including three copper cables, three fiber optic cables, and two signaling cables.

Investigators discovered the presence of an accelerant at the scene, prompting the state protection unit of the Munich police to take over the investigation. Authorities suspect that the incident may be linked to left-wing extremist activities, as there have been multiple attacks on critical infrastructure by such groups in the past.

The repercussions of this incident were severe, resulting in 96 train cancellations, 16 diversions, and a total delay of 3,042 minutes across the train network in Bavaria. The disruptions were felt as far away as Erfurt in Thuringia, where train services were also affected.

In a related development, just hours after the Munich incident, four cable shafts were set ablaze in Basel, Switzerland, not far from the German border. German and Swiss authorities are currently investigating any potential links between the two incidents.

Left-wing extremist groups often view the state and capitalism as primary adversaries, targeting critical infrastructures such as power lines, railway systems, and telecommunications networks as symbols of governmental and corporate power.
