In light of ongoing geopolitical tensions and the conflict in Ukraine, Finland's President has publicly addressed the nation's military capabilities and readiness in the face of potential threats from Russia. With a significant border of approximately 1,300 kilometers shared with its eastern neighbor, Finland maintains a robust military posture.
President Alexander Stubb emphasized the strength of Finland's armed forces, which are reportedly among the largest in Europe. He noted that the country possesses around 900,000 soldiers, including active and reserve forces, with an additional 280,000 individuals available for mobilization if necessary. This military strength is underscored by the presence of substantial artillery capabilities, which Stubb claims position Finland alongside Poland as a leader in European artillery.
Stubb expressed that in international relations, particularly with Russia, a show of strength is crucial. He articulated that history has shown that weakness may incite aggression, highlighting Finland's long-standing relationship and complex history with Russia.
Despite the impressive figures regarding troop numbers, questions remain about the practical mobilization of such forces. Finland's military structure includes around 24,000 professional soldiers, with only 16,000 engaged in land forces. Furthermore, while the country boasts a notable inventory of 239 Leopard 2 tanks, it operates with only a single armored brigade, which some analysts consider insufficient given the extensive border it shares with Russia.
Finland's military also includes approximately 570 Sisu Pasi armored vehicles, which provide limited armament capabilities. The country has been enhancing its artillery since 2017, acquiring advanced systems such as the K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers from South Korea, bolstering its defense capabilities in the region.
The Finnish government has made significant investments in military readiness, enabling its forces to conduct regular training and exercises, including participation in NATO maneuvers. This preparedness is deemed essential as tensions continue to escalate in Eastern Europe.
As Finland navigates these challenges, the President's reassurances regarding military strength reflect a commitment to national security amid an uncertain geopolitical landscape.
