Federal Association of eMobility Files for Insolvency Amid Industry Challenges

Tue 27th May, 2025

Berlin - A significant development for the electric mobility sector has emerged as the Federal Association of eMobility (BEM) has officially declared insolvency at the Berlin-Charlottenburg District Court. This organization serves as a crucial advocate for the electric mobility industry in Germany.

The insolvency application was submitted on May 23, 2025, and Joachim Voigt-Salus has been appointed as the provisional insolvency administrator. His role will involve assessing the potential for the association's recovery in the coming weeks, as reported by electrive.net. Should recovery not be feasible, the association may face permanent insolvency.

Although there has been a notable increase of 42.8% in new electric vehicle registrations, this growth has not been sufficient to offset the declining figures in the traditional combustion engine market. The implications of BEM's insolvency could be extensive, given the association's pivotal role in representing and connecting various stakeholders within the industry.

Founded in 2009, the BEM's mission was to promote electric mobility based on renewable energy sources and to facilitate networking among key players in the field. Its membership comprises approximately 450 companies, employing over one million individuals and generating revenues near 100 billion euros. Notable members include BayWa, gridX, Mitsubishi, and TÜV Rheinland.

According to Voigt-Salus, the association's financial difficulties stem from a combination of external and internal factors. The challenging overall economic landscape and specific struggles faced by electric mobility companies have increasingly burdened the organization. Additionally, internal conflicts have led to member dissatisfaction, resulting in departures, resignations, and issues regarding membership fees.

The board of the association expressed regret over the initiation of the insolvency proceedings, acknowledging that this represents a significant turning point in the organization's history. They indicated that the financial assessment revealed a state of balance sheet insolvency, prompting the decision to file for insolvency.

As the electric mobility industry continues to evolve, the fate of the BEM will be closely monitored, given its critical role in advocating for the sector's interests and fostering collaboration among its members.
