FDP Calls for Dismissal of Interior Minister Nancy Faeser Amid Migrant Policy Criticism

Fri 24th Jan, 2025

In the wake of a fatal knife attack in Aschaffenburg, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) is demanding the resignation of Interior Minister Nancy Faeser. The incident, which involved the assailant, a 28-year-old Afghan, has reignited intense scrutiny of Germany's migration policies.

Christian Dürr, the leader of the FDP parliamentary faction, asserted that Faeser has not implemented any of the proposed measures from the coalition government known as the 'traffic light coalition'. He criticized the lack of border controls and the absence of repatriation flights to Afghanistan, emphasizing the government's failure to monitor individuals considered security risks within Germany.

Dürr stated that the authorities have lost track of potential threats, highlighting that the attacker was still in the country due to the inefficiencies of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). He urged Chancellor Olaf Scholz to take decisive action and relieve Faeser of her duties.

The incident in Aschaffenburg, which resulted in two fatalities, has intensified the ongoing debate regarding Germany's immigration policies, particularly following a similar attack in Solingen in August 2023 that claimed three lives. That attack was later claimed by the Islamic State.

In response to these incidents, the traffic light coalition has discussed a comprehensive security package aimed at tightening asylum and weapon regulations, while also enhancing the powers of law enforcement agencies. However, not all proposed measures received approval in the Bundesrat, Germany's Federal Council, with some provisions related to asylum seeker benefits and knife prohibitions being passed.

Faeser has cautioned against utilizing the Aschaffenburg incident for populist rhetoric, asserting that the government is actively working to expedite the deportation of serious offenders to Afghanistan. The interior minister's stance underscores her commitment to addressing the issues while navigating the criticisms of her performance.
