F-35 Fighter Jets Prove Crucial in Iran-Israel Conflict

Sat 21st Jun, 2025

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran has highlighted the strategic importance of the F-35 fighter jets, which have become indispensable in recent military operations. The F-35I Adir, Israel's customized version of the U.S.-manufactured stealth jet, has been actively involved in numerous long-range strikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, air defense systems, and missile sites.

Despite previous dismissals by tech billionaire Elon Musk, who referred to manned fighter jets as 'obsolete' amidst the rise of drone warfare, the current situation has demonstrated the effectiveness of the F-35 in combat. Musk's comments, made late last year, suggested that piloted aircraft endangered the lives of their crews in an age dominated by unmanned systems. However, the reality on the ground has proven otherwise.

In recent weeks, as hostilities escalated between Israel and Iran, the F-35I Adir jets have played a pivotal role, successfully executing deep incursions into Iranian airspace with minimal resistance. Israeli officials report that these operations have led to the neutralization of multiple Iranian air defense installations, allowing the Israeli military to assert control over significant portions of the Iranian airspace.

This decisive action is a stark contrast to the capabilities of unmanned systems, which have yet to achieve similar results in this context. Military analysts have noted that the use of manned stealth aircraft like the F-35 offers operational advantages in complex environments where sophisticated enemy defenses are present.

General David Deptula, a former U.S. Air Force lieutenant general and current dean of the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, has commented on the functionality of manned stealth aircraft in modern warfare. He emphasized that the recent Israeli strikes exemplify a blueprint for successful air operations against well-defended adversaries. The F-35s were able to bypass and neutralize Iranian air defenses before targeting key installations, showcasing their versatility and effectiveness.

In addition, the U.S. has taken steps to bolster its military presence in the region, with President Donald Trump dispatching the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier and accompanying vessels as part of a strategic response to the escalating tensions.

Furthermore, the relevance of the F-35 is underscored by a recent incident involving a digitally manipulated image that falsely depicted a downed Israeli F-35. This misinformation highlights the ongoing interest and scrutiny surrounding the capabilities of these aircraft.

As the conflict persists, the F-35s are expected to continue playing a crucial role in Israel's military strategy, reinforcing the argument for their importance in contemporary air warfare despite the growing prominence of unmanned systems.
