The European Commission has put forth a proposal for a standardized list of safe countries of origin, suggesting that seven nations qualify for this designation. The countries identified are Kosovo, Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, India, Morocco, and Tunisia. This initiative is part of the Commission's efforts to address components of the new European migration and asylum pact ahead of its implementation in June 2026.
According to the Commission, several member states already maintain their own national lists of safe countries. The introduction of an EU-wide list is intended to enhance consistency and support the uniform application of asylum policies across the continent.
With this list, member states would be able to process asylum applications from individuals hailing from the designated safe countries more swiftly, as it is anticipated that these applications are unlikely to be successful. The objective is to ensure that these procedures do not exceed three months.
In addition to the seven proposed countries, the Commission has recommended that all nations currently classified as EU candidate states be regarded as safe countries. This categorization is based on the premise that these candidates must already satisfy fundamental criteria that define safety.
However, the Commission clarified that being designated as a safe country does not guarantee the safety of every individual from that nation. Each asylum application must be assessed on a case-by-case basis, regardless of the applicant's country of origin.
Among the seven countries mentioned, only Kosovo is currently recognized as a safe country by Germany's Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). The proposed list awaits approval from both the European Parliament and the member states before it can be officially adopted.
