EU Leaders Visit Kyiv on Ukraine War Anniversary as Macron Heads to Washington

Mon 24th Feb, 2025

As the world marks the third anniversary of Russia's extensive invasion of Ukraine, top leaders from the European Union are set to arrive in Kyiv to demonstrate their support. Notable figures such as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa, along with around 20 EU commissioners, will participate in a summit orchestrated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

This gathering in Kyiv is regarded as particularly significant in light of recent statements from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has indicated that Ukraine should not expect substantial military assistance from the United States moving forward. Trump advocates for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia to reach a resolution to the ongoing conflict. While efforts are underway to persuade Trump to maintain some level of support for Ukraine, discussions about U.S. military involvement in Europe remain contentious.

French President Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to meet with Trump in Washington, where they plan to discuss the situation in Ukraine with other leaders from the Group of Seven (G7) nations.

In addition to the high-level meetings in Kyiv and Washington, the United Nations in New York is set to be another focal point for diplomatic discussions regarding Ukraine. The U.S. will present its perspective on re-engaging with Russia, attempting to rally international support for this approach. Notably, a proposed resolution that is being reviewed in the UN does not label Russia as the aggressor in the conflict.

Meanwhile, EU foreign ministers are convening in Brussels to deliberate on a new sanctions package aimed at Russia, reflecting the EU's ongoing commitment to impose measures in response to the invasion.
