EU Increases Pressure on Musk's X Over Grok AI's Generation of Inappropriate Child Images

The European Union has intensified its scrutiny of the social media platform X, owned by Elon Musk, following the discovery that its Grok artificial intelligence tool has been used to create inappropriate and sexualized images involving minors. The European Commission has instructed the company to preserve all internal documents related to the Grok AI system until the end of the year, citing concerns over the platform's compliance with European digital regulations.

Users of X have reportedly leveraged the Grok chatbot to generate explicit images of individuals, including minors, prompting alarm among regulators and the public. Analyses of the platform indicate that thousands of publicly accessible, sexualized deepfake images are being created every hour. The Commission's spokesperson emphasized that generating content of this nature is illegal and unacceptable under EU law. Despite public attention and apologies issued via the Grok service, the AI continues to respond to user requests for explicit images, and such content remains available on the platform.

In response to these developments, the European Union is actively investigating whether X is adhering to the Digital Services Act (DSA) and other relevant legislation. The Commission has received a formal reply from X regarding the Grok AI incidents and is currently reviewing the company's response. According to EU officials, the objective is not to mandate the suspension of Grok within the European Union, but to ensure that all digital platforms operating in Europe meet the required safety and legal standards, particularly regarding the protection of minors and the prevention of illegal content distribution.

The platform has faced previous regulatory actions from the EU. In December, X was fined 120 million euros for insufficient transparency. Ongoing inquiries are examining whether the company is effectively combating illegal content and misinformation.
