In the lead-up to the upcoming automotive summit, Environment Minister Carsten Schneider is firmly advocating for the EU-wide ban on combustion engines by 2035. Despite facing opposition from the Union and some concerns within the SPD, Schneider remains committed to the timeline set for phasing out conventional gasoline and diesel vehicles.
Speaking to the media, Schneider acknowledged the pressures faced by various suppliers but emphasized that many companies have already adapted to the new environmental regulations. He pointed out that ensuring planning security is crucial for successful business operations, stating that continuing on the established path is economically prudent.
Schneider highlighted that there is still a decade left for the automotive industry to transition, expressing confidence in the engineers' ability to meet the target. According to the current legal framework, from 2035 onwards, new vehicles sold in the EU must not emit CO2, or manufacturers will face penalties.
However, the coalition government remains divided on this issue. Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the CDU has recently expressed his intention to advocate for the repeal of the combustion engine ban at the EU level, arguing for the inclusion of hybrid vehicles that utilize both traditional combustion engines and electric motors.
In 2022, a decision was made to prohibit the registration of new petrol or diesel cars in the EU starting in 2035, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions from the transportation sector. The Union party continues to oppose the combustion engine ban, with some members of the SPD voicing reservations about adhering to the 2035 deadline. Notably, Olaf Lies, the SPD Minister-President of Lower Saxony, has called for a reconsideration of the planned phase-out.
Merz is set to convene an automotive summit at the Chancellery this Thursday, where several federal ministers, state representatives, and stakeholders from the automotive industry and labor unions will be in attendance, including Lies.
