As temperatures plummet below minus 10 degrees Celsius, the plight of the homeless intensifies, highlighting an urgent need for support. The emergency shelters designated for cold weather assistance are currently overwhelmed, with many unable to accommodate individuals seeking refuge from the harsh conditions.
Barbara Breuer, a spokesperson for the Berlin City Mission, reported that the cold weather buses have been unable to find space for those in need after 11 PM in recent nights. As a result, the drivers are offering hot tea, instant meals, and sleeping bags to those they cannot shelter. Forecasts indicated that temperatures could drop to as low as minus 13 degrees, with some areas potentially experiencing even colder conditions.
In light of this situation, Breuer is calling for donations of sleeping bags and insulating mats, as well as warm clothing specifically for men, including jackets, hoodies, and thermal underwear. She emphasized that these items should be clean, intact, and free of stains.
During the daytime, there may be some respite for the homeless, as various day centers and facilities remain open. However, as night falls, conditions become dire. Individuals who typically avoid sheltering are now increasingly seeking help from the cold weather services.
Breuer encourages community members to engage with homeless individuals and, with their consent, contact the cold weather buses for assistance. If someone appears to be in distress or disoriented, it is advisable to call emergency services instead. Additionally, she urges residents to show solidarity by providing hot drinks or warming items, such as hot water bottles, to those in need within their neighborhoods.
As Berlin braces for further freezing temperatures, the community's support is crucial in ensuring that the most vulnerable are not left to endure the cold alone.
