Rising Costs of Eggs and Chocolate: Traditional Easter Treats Become More Expensive

Tue 15th Apr, 2025

The upcoming Easter celebration is set to be a costly affair for consumers, as significant price increases have been reported for essential festive items. Traditional staples such as colored eggs and chocolate bunnies are seeing notable price hikes this year, adding financial strain to holiday preparations.

According to recent data from the Federal Statistical Office, consumer prices for many Easter-related products have risen sharply after already experiencing substantial increases over the past four years. While prices for eggs rose by 2.5% in March compared to the previous year, this figure follows a staggering 38.5% increase seen from 2020 to 2024.

In contrast, chocolate products have experienced an even steeper rise, with prices climbing by 39.9% during the same period. This is considerably higher than the average increase in food prices (33.2%) and overall consumer prices (19.3%), which encompass all goods and services, including energy and housing costs. In the spring of 2025, chocolate items are now priced 16.7% higher than they were a year prior.

The upward trend in prices extends to homemade Easter classics as well, with the costs of almost all primary ingredients for traditional recipes rising compared to last year. Home bakers, in particular, are feeling the impact as the price of butter has surged significantly, making it more expensive than it was before Easter 2024. In March, butter prices were reported to be 23.3% higher than the same month last year, although they have seen some decline since reaching record highs in the autumn.

On a more positive note, sugar prices have decreased, now standing 26.1% lower than the previous year's levels. The minor increases in the prices of eggs (2.5%) and flour (0.4%) continue to reflect the overall trend of rising costs.

Despite the overall increase in baking expenses, making an Easter lamb cake may still be relatively affordable compared to many other desserts. While the rise in butter prices has a more considerable effect on the total cost than the decrease in sugar prices, the overall cost of ingredients remains competitive.

Fortunately, experts indicate that there will be no shortages of eggs during the Easter season, ensuring that consumers can still participate in this festive tradition without concern.
