The motorcycle season is officially underway in Germany, and Bavaria is setting the pace with the highest number of motorcycles per capita. Recent analyses of data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority reveal that the district of Freyung-Grafenau tops the list, boasting an impressive 121 motorcycles for every 1,000 residents. This figure surpasses all other registration districts in the country.
Nationally, the average stands at 58 motorcycles per 1,000 inhabitants, reflecting a slight increase from the previous year. Last year, the figures were 119 and 57, respectively. In stark contrast, the cities of Schwerin and Rostock report the lowest motorcycle densities, each with just 25 motorcycles per 1,000 residents.
A closer look at the 399 registration districts highlights a significant urban-rural divide. The lowest rankings are predominantly held by urban areas and city-states, while rural districts, particularly in Bavaria, dominate the top positions. Following Freyung-Grafenau, the next eleven districts with the highest motorcycle ownership are also located in Bavaria, with Cham at 109 motorcycles per 1,000 residents and Pfaffenhofen at 98.
The highest motorcycle density outside Bavaria is observed in the Bodenseekreis of Baden-Württemberg, where there are 97 motorcycles per 1,000 residents. In terms of federal states, Bavaria leads with an average of 77 motorcycles per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by Baden-Württemberg at 67, and then Rheinland-Palatinate and Saarland, both at 65. City-states such as Bremen, Hamburg, and Berlin lag behind, with figures of 30, 31, and 32 motorcycles per 1,000 residents, respectively.
Among the Länder, Saxony-Anhalt records the lowest figures for motorcycle ownership among the larger states, with just 49 motorcycles per 1,000 residents. Other states like Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern report figures of 51 each. Meanwhile, Niedersachsen has 56, and both Hessen and Schleswig-Holstein stand at 55, with Thüringen slightly behind at 54.
Within the states, there are notable variations. In Bavaria, for instance, the city of Schweinfurt records only 41 motorcycles per 1,000 residents, while in Saxony-Anhalt, the Saalekreis shows a higher density of 63, and in Saxony, the Erzgebirgskreis reaches 72.
As the weather warms up, many motorcycle enthusiasts are bringing their bikes out of winter storage. Numerous riders have seasonal registration plates that activate in April, signaling the return of biking to the roads. Authorities, particularly the police in southern Bavaria, emphasize the importance of vigilance during this transition period. Other road users must readjust to the presence of motorcycles, which can easily be overlooked due to their smaller size and speed.
Motorcyclists are also urged to exercise caution as they reacquaint themselves with riding after the winter break. Law enforcement officials recommend participating in safety training to regain confidence and improve skills.
This weekend will see the annual motorcycle rally in Kulmbach, a tradition since the late 1990s to welcome the new season. Organizers anticipate attracting up to 35,000 visitors over the two days, offering not just bike rides but a variety of activities for motorcycle enthusiasts, including concerts, vehicle exhibitions, and motorcycle handling demonstrations.
