Travelers in southern Germany should prepare for significant disruptions over the Easter holidays as Deutsche Bahn announces the closure of key rail lines for essential maintenance work. Starting from Maundy Thursday, April 17, the high-speed rail line between Mannheim and Stuttgart will be shut down, followed by the closure of the Rhine Valley line between Karlsruhe and Basel from Good Friday, April 18.
Thousands of passengers are expected to face extended travel times and train cancellations during this period. The closure of the Mannheim-Stuttgart route will last until June 6, affecting intercity, regional, and freight services, with delays of up to 40 minutes possible. Some connections may be entirely removed from the schedule. Travelers can check updated travel times through the Deutsche Bahn booking systems.
Meanwhile, the Rhine Valley line will be closed for repair work until April 27. Long-distance trains arriving from the north will terminate in Baden-Baden or, in rare cases, Karlsruhe. Passengers needing to travel onward to Freiburg or Switzerland will have to switch to bus services provided by the railway company. The journey from Karlsruhe to Basel, which usually takes about one hour and 40 minutes, could take up to three hours during the closure.
The local transport network will also experience disruptions. For example, only one track will be available between Karlsruhe, Rastatt, and Baden-Baden, and complete track closures are scheduled during specific nighttime hours. Bicycles will not be permitted on the replacement bus services, which will deploy between 100 and 130 buses daily to assist travelers despite the ongoing construction.
The necessity for these closures stems from geological issues in the Freudenstein Tunnel, located near Knittlingen. The tunnel has been experiencing complications due to the expansion of anhydrite-containing rock caused by water ingress, leading to minor structural damage. As part of the repairs, safety nets will be installed along 1,000 meters of the tunnel at an estimated cost of approximately EUR7.5 million. Additionally, improvements on the Rhine Valley line will include the renewal of tracks and switches, as well as ground stabilization work.
Such maintenance activities are typically scheduled during holiday periods when passenger volumes are lower. According to a Deutsche Bahn spokesperson, the travel demand during these times significantly decreases compared to regular weekdays, allowing for necessary repairs to be conducted more efficiently.
Travelers are advised to pack sufficient refreshments and entertainment to make their journeys more comfortable, as onboard catering services may not be available. It is also recommended to reserve seats in advance due to high demand during the Easter season. Some trains will even feature longer compositions, accommodating up to 1,000 passengers instead of the usual 500.
