The German Federal Minister of the Interior, Alexander Dobrindt, has announced a significant uptick in border rejections following the implementation of stricter border controls. In the first week of these enhanced measures, authorities turned away 729 attempts at illegal entry, marking a 45% increase from the previous week, which recorded 511 rejections.
During a visit to a border crossing in Kiefersfelden, Bavaria, Dobrindt noted that in addition to the rejections, there were 51 asylum applications submitted at the border since the new controls began last week. Out of these, 32 applications were rejected, while the remainder came from vulnerable groups, including children, the sick, and pregnant women.
In the prior week, 44 asylum applications had been filed, all of which resulted in the applicants being temporarily admitted into Germany. Dobrindt emphasized that the new border controls signal a shift in Germany's migration policy. He stated that the measures are indicative of a governmental commitment to reform.
Despite the increased scrutiny at the borders, Dobrindt reassured the public that there are no plans for border closures. He clarified that the flow of traffic remains unaffected, with no excessive delays reported. However, he acknowledged that the heightened controls do present challenges for law enforcement and border officials.
Markus Söder, the Minister-President of Bavaria and leader of the CSU, commented on the situation, describing the circumstances at Germany's borders as fundamentally altered since the recent governmental transition. He characterized the new coalition as enacting a complete reversal in migration policy, emphasizing a return to a strict adherence to law and order at the borders.
Söder promised that the new measures would enhance safety within Germany, asserting that citizens can expect a decrease in crime and illegal activities as a result of the border controls. He encouraged those coming to Germany for work opportunities, stating that they would have the chance to remain, but warned that individuals without proper residency permits must leave the country.
Recent studies, including one by the ifo Institute, suggest that migration and asylum do not have a systematic impact on crime rates in host countries, with effective integration into the labor market seen as a key preventative measure against crime among migrant populations.
Dobrindt, shortly after taking office, ordered the enforcement of these stricter border measures to gradually increase the number of rejections. He indicated that exemptions would be considered for specific vulnerable groups, ensuring that humanitarian considerations remain part of the policy.
