New Security Measures at dm Drugstores: Premium Cosmetics Now in Lockers

Thu 6th Feb, 2025

Berlin - In a bid to combat rising thefts, customers at dm drugstores will now find premium cosmetic products secured in lockers. In various locations across Berlin, shoppers can no longer simply reach for high-priced creams and serums from the shelves. Instead, they must request assistance from a store employee to access these items, a response to a significant increase in shoplifting incidents, particularly by organized crime groups.

According to reports, nearly 40,000 shoplifting cases were documented in Berlin alone during 2023, with the actual number likely being much higher. As a result, many shelves are left with only empty packaging for these expensive products, with the actual items stored securely at the register due to limited space.

To enhance security, dm has begun placing premium cosmetics in Plexiglas enclosures. Customers wishing to purchase these items will need to locate a staff member who has the key. A spokesperson for dm explained that the decision regarding which products to secure and the specific security measures implemented are determined by individual store teams.

This move is inspired by similar practices in the United States, where major retailers such as Target and pharmacy chains like CVS and Walgreens have faced comparable issues with theft. In response, many have introduced locked displays for a wide range of products. Some CVS locations are even developing a system where customers can unlock these boxes via a mobile application.

Uncertainty surrounds whether other competitors, such as Rossmann, will adopt similar security measures. A spokesperson for Rossmann stated that the company prefers not to comment on matters related to theft, citing the sensitivity of such corporate information.

As retailers continue to adapt to evolving challenges within the industry, it remains to be seen how these security measures will impact shopping experiences and consumer behavior in drugstores across Germany.
