DLRG Warns Against Walking on Ice in Brandenburg Waters

Mon 17th Feb, 2025

The Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft (DLRG) has issued a strong warning regarding the dangers of walking on ice-covered bodies of water in Brandenburg, despite recent freezing temperatures. A spokesperson from the organization noted that while some waters may have developed a stable ice layer, this is not the case for most areas.

Recently, a rescue operation took place in Cottbus after two girls ventured onto a frozen pond and found themselves unable to return safely. The DLRG emphasizes that ice thickness below 15 centimeters is generally unsafe for walking. Given the current weather conditions, which include daytime temperatures occasionally rising above freezing, achieving the necessary thickness for safe ice is unlikely.

For instance, while some parts of the Spreewald may have sections of ice thick enough to support weight, the majority of visitors may not be familiar with these areas. Officials have advised caution and highlighted the risks of misjudging the ice's thickness.

In past winters, the Spreewald's channels were frequently frozen, attracting visitors who enjoyed activities like ice skating and riding sleds. However, this year, the DLRG is discouraging such activities until conditions improve.

As safety remains a priority, it is crucial for individuals to stay informed about the state of local waterways. The DLRG's warnings serve as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with ice-covered areas, particularly for those who may underestimate the dangers involved.
