The newly appointed Development Minister has voiced her strong opposition to budget cuts affecting her department. Emphasizing the critical nature of economic cooperation and development in today's global landscape, she stated her commitment to advocate for her ministry's budget during the upcoming budget discussions.

At 35 years old, the minister highlighted the unprecedented importance of public development assistance, particularly given the rising challenges posed by nationalistic trends among key global partners, including the withdrawal of the United States from certain commitments. She outlined the urgent implications of these trends, noting that they contribute to increasing poverty, hunger, epidemics, and refugee crises.

Financial Minister Lars Klingbeil has called for spending cuts across all government departments as part of budget consolidation efforts. The coalition agreement between the ruling parties, the SPD and the Union, stipulates that a reasonable reduction in public development assistance is necessary for fiscal tightening. However, the coalition also aims to enhance the effectiveness of development aid by refining its strategic focus and encouraging greater involvement from private investors in development financing.

In this context, the newly appointed minister has reiterated her determination to ensure that public development efforts remain robust and effectively address the challenges faced by vulnerable populations worldwide.
