Deutsche Bahn to Discontinue 'ServiceStores' at Train Stations

Wed 2nd Apr, 2025

The Deutsche Bahn (DB) has announced the discontinuation of its 'ServiceStores' brand at train stations across Germany. These small retail outlets, which have offered travelers snacks, beverages, and newspapers, will no longer operate under the DB brand name. Instead, they will continue to function under the management of private franchise operators, allowing for a smoother transition and modernization of the storefronts.

According to the DB, the decision aims to refocus its efforts on core railway operations and improve the overall experience for passengers at train stations. This shift is part of a broader strategy to enhance passenger information systems and upgrade station facilities, ensuring travelers have access to high-quality services.

The 'ServiceStores' brand has been part of the DB's offerings since 1998, with approximately 200 locations at smaller and medium-sized train stations across the country. Initially, the concept was designed to support small kiosk operators in establishing a presence within the train station environment. However, the market has predominantly been dominated by a few leading companies known for their expertise in traveler needs.

As the DB moves forward, it is providing existing operators the opportunity to continue their businesses independently. The transition is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, marking the end of the 'ServiceStore DB' brand. The DB emphasizes that while the brand will be phased out, the retail locations will not disappear. Rather, they will be modernized and rebranded by their respective operators, ensuring continued service availability for passengers.

This strategic change reflects the DB's commitment to refining its operational focus while still catering to the needs of travelers. By stepping back from the retail space, the DB aims to allocate more resources toward enhancing the travel experience, which could include better facilities, improved signage, and more efficient use of station space.
