Progress Continues on the Demolition of the Deteriorating Ring Railway Bridge

Mon 14th Apr, 2025

The demolition work on the aging Ring Railway Bridge in western Berlin is progressing continuously, with operations taking place around the clock. As reported by the Autobahn GmbH, the dismantling of the structure is well underway.

Currently, the concrete debris from the bridge is being crushed and gradually transported to interim storage sites or recycling facilities. This is part of a systematic approach to manage the construction waste effectively. The large concrete elements that were removed have fallen into a designated sand bed to prevent damage to the S-Bahn tracks located beneath the bridges. According to Autobahn GmbH, the crushed materials will be sorted into categories such as concrete, steel, or plastic, ensuring that all materials are fully recycled.

The demolition process officially began on Saturday morning, albeit with a slight delay, and is scheduled for completion by Thursday. In conjunction with the Ring Railway Bridge work, demolition of the nearby Westend Bridge, located further north along the A100, also commenced on Saturday evening. For those interested in following the progress, both demolition sites are accessible via live streaming.

The Ring Railway Bridge was completely closed in mid-March due to safety concerns, as a previously known crack had unexpectedly expanded. Shortly thereafter, the S-Bahn line beneath the bridge was also shut down. Plans are in place for the construction of new bridges, though the timeline for this project remains uncertain.
