Ten Years After the OECD's Warning: Bias Against Boys in Schools Still Ignored
Section: News
As Germany approaches the 35th anniversary of its reunification, plans to name a street in Berlin after former Chancellor Helmut Kohl remain unresolved. Despite expectations for a timely tribute, officials have indicated that the street renaming will not occur by the upcoming Day of German Unity on October 3.
The discussions regarding the naming of a street in honor of Kohl, who is often referred to as the Chancellor of Unity due to his significant role in the reunification of East and West Germany, are still ongoing. The Berlin Senate's press office confirmed that conversations are underway but did not provide a definitive timeline for the street's naming.
Berlin's governing mayor, Kai Wegner, had expressed intentions to commemorate Kohl before the anniversary date. He suggested that the district of Mitte, which houses key governmental institutions such as the Bundestag and the Federal Chancellery, would be an appropriate location for the new street or square dedicated to Kohl.
However, the district office for Mitte has indicated that a completion before the anniversary is not feasible, noting that they have not yet received any formal proposals regarding the renaming. According to district officials, the Bezirksverordnetenversammlung, the local district assembly, has not been presented with any initiatives on this matter.
For the renaming process to proceed, it must be published in the official district gazette, and there is a mandatory waiting period of three months before it can take effect, assuming no objections are raised. Currently, the area already features streets named after prominent figures such as former Chancellor Willy Brandt and Konrad Adenauer.
The conversation about honoring Helmut Kohl with a street name has been ongoing for several years, yet no concrete actions have been taken. Both the CDU and SPD parties in Berlin have included a commitment to name a street or square after Kohl in their coalition agreement.
As discussions continue, the potential for a street naming remains uncertain. Helmut Kohl, who served as Chancellor from 1982 to 1998, is recognized for his pivotal leadership during the reunification process but is also remembered for controversies, including his involvement in the CDU funding scandal.
