A missile attack by Russia on the city of Sumy in northeastern Ukraine has resulted in the deaths of at least 31 individuals, according to Ukrainian emergency services. The missile struck in the center of the regional capital, as reported by Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. In addition to the fatalities, 84 others have been injured in the assault, which impacted people on the streets, in vehicles, and within buildings. Footage circulating on social media depicts the aftermath of the attack, showing bodies on the streets, a destroyed bus, and burned-out cars. This incident marks one of the most severe Russian offensives against Ukraine this year. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, urging the international community to respond decisively against Russia. He characterized such actions as those only perpetrated by criminals, emphasizing that they impact innocent lives. Artem Kobsar, the acting mayor of Sumy, also denounced the strike, describing it as a terrible tragedy for the community on what was meant to be a joyful Palm Sunday. Initial reports indicated more than 20 fatalities. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha labeled the attack a war crime, denouncing it as an act of absolute evil on a significant Christian holiday. He criticized Russia for rejecting a US proposal for a ceasefire made on March 11, stating that instead of peace, Russia is escalating its acts of terror. Sybiha called on Western allies to bolster Ukraine's air defense capabilities and to intensify pressure on the Russian government. He asserted that strength is the only language that Moscow comprehends, and it is the only way to bring an end to the ongoing terror. In light of the attack, Zelensky reiterated the need for international support, highlighting that discussions have never halted missile strikes and bombings. He insisted on a more robust stance against Russia, which he described as a terrorist entity. The day before the missile strike, the foreign ministers of Russia and Ukraine had accused each other of violating a US-brokered agreement to suspend attacks on energy infrastructure. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed that Ukraine has consistently attacked Russian targets, while Sybiha vehemently denied these allegations.
