Dalai Lama Confirms Future Successor Ahead of 90th Birthday

Wed 2nd Jul, 2025

The Dalai Lama has announced that the institution of the Dalai Lama will persist beyond his lifetime, confirming plans for a successor during a recent address in Dharamshala, India. This statement comes just days before he celebrates his 90th birthday and has ended years of speculation regarding the future of the title.

While addressing a gathering of religious leaders, the spiritual leader of Tibet stated, "I am affirming that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue." He emphasized that his successor could be of any gender and not necessarily of Tibetan descent, reflecting an inclusive approach to the continuation of this significant role.

The Dalai Lama, who has lived in exile in India since fleeing Tibet in 1959, further elaborated that he has received numerous appeals from Buddhists in Tibet, Mongolia, parts of Russia, and China, urging him to ensure the continuation of the institution. He specifically mentioned receiving messages from Tibetans within Tibet who expressed a desire for this tradition to carry on.

In light of this announcement, the Chinese Foreign Ministry responded, asserting that the next Dalai Lama must be approved by the central government of China. A spokesperson reiterated the requirement that the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama and other important Buddhist figures must be selected through a traditional method involving a golden urn and sanctioned by the state.

The Dalai Lama is the 14th individual to hold this title since its inception in 1587. Tibetan Buddhists regard him as the reincarnation of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, an enlightened being who remains in the cycle of life to assist others. His recent confirmation of a successor is seen as a pivotal moment for the future of Tibetan Buddhism.

He took a moment in his address to clarify that the Gaden Phodrang Trust, which he founded, will have exclusive authority in recognizing his future reincarnation. He stated that they should follow established procedures for the search and recognition of the next Dalai Lama, emphasizing that no external authority should interfere in this sacred process.

Globally, the Dalai Lama is recognized as a figure of non-violence and compassion and has become synonymous with the Tibetan struggle against Chinese rule. His influential position has drawn both admiration and criticism. In 2023, he faced backlash for an incident involving a child, for which he later apologized.

As the situation evolves, there are concerns among exiled Tibetans that China might attempt to impose its own successor for the Dalai Lama, further asserting control over the Tibet Autonomous Region. The Dalai Lama had previously indicated that his successor would be born outside of China and urged followers to reject any successor designated by Beijing.

Furthermore, Penpa Tsering, the leader of the Tibetan government-in-exile, mentioned that the Dalai Lama is open to visiting Tibet if his health permits, but he would not reside there due to ongoing restrictions on freedom. Tsering noted that the Dalai Lama expressed a wish to be born in a free environment in his next life, which is also connected to the matter of his reincarnation.
