Czech Republic Begins Pivotal Parliamentary Elections

Fri 3rd Oct, 2025

The Czech Republic has officially commenced its significant parliamentary elections, with polling stations opening their doors on Friday at 2:00 PM. Voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballots until 10:00 PM that evening and again on Saturday until 2:00 PM.

This election is particularly crucial as it may determine the future political landscape of the nation. Former Prime Minister Andrej Babis, a billionaire and leader of the populist ANO party, is poised to make a strong comeback after spending four years in opposition. Recent polling data from the STEM agency indicates that Babis's party is projected to receive approximately 29.3% of the vote.

In contrast, current Prime Minister Petr Fiala, who leads the center-right coalition Spolu, faces a challenging path as his party appears to be slipping to around 20.5%. The ultranationalist party, Freedom and Direct Democracy, led by entrepreneur Tomio Okamura, is also vying for a significant share of the electorate.

With reports suggesting that nearly one-third of voters remain undecided as the elections approach, both candidates are intensifying their efforts to sway these crucial constituents. In a recent televised debate, Babis and Fiala engaged in a heated exchange, each accusing the other of dishonesty. Babis has been vocal in his criticism of various EU initiatives, including the Green Deal and immigration policies, while Fiala has cautioned that a Babis victory could steer the nation towards closer ties with Russia.

Fiala emphasized the importance of a strong national stance in the face of external pressures, particularly from Russia, stating that the country must remain resilient and vigilant.

This election will decide all 200 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, the more influential of the two parliamentary chambers in Prague. Initial results are expected to emerge late Saturday evening. Following the election, President Petr Pavel will play a critical role in appointing the new government, having previously defeated Babis in the presidential elections held in January 2023.
