Crackdown on Call Centers Behind Shock Calls in Poland

Mon 28th Jul, 2025

Authorities in Poland have dismantled a call center involved in fraudulent shock calls, a tactic that preys on vulnerable individuals. The operation, which was based in the city of Bydgoszcz, led to the arrest of two German citizens aged 26 and 28, who were caught in the act of attempting to swindle an elderly victim from Baden-Württemberg.

The operation was a collaborative effort between German and Polish law enforcement agencies, with the Frankfurt General Prosecutor's Office confirming the arrests. The suspects are accused of orchestrating a systematic scheme that involved contacting potential victims under false pretenses, often posing as police officers or prosecutors.

The fraudulent practice, known as the "grandchild scam" or "shock call," targets primarily elderly individuals, deceiving them into believing that a family member is in urgent legal trouble. Victims are pressured to transfer substantial sums of money or hand over valuable items, such as gold jewelry, to avoid repercussions.

Investigators revealed that the call center was a central hub for a larger criminal network, which had reportedly reached out to victims across Germany, employing various tactics to instill fear and urgency. In at least ten confirmed incidents, the scammers managed to convince their targets of the fabricated crisis involving a loved one.

The operation's success highlights the ongoing collaboration between international law enforcement agencies to combat organized crime and protect vulnerable populations from scams that exploit emotional distress. Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious calls, emphasizing the importance of verifying any claims made during such solicitations.
