The Consumer Protection Agency is alerting the public about a wave of fraudulent invoices being sent to individuals across Germany, claiming payment for purported phone sex services. These deceptive communications are being delivered via mail, SMS, and WhatsApp, targeting unsuspecting victims with demands for payments that can reach up to EUR500.
According to the agency, the fraudsters typically invoke the alleged use of phone sex hotlines, employing various names in their correspondence. The invoices often contain details such as phone numbers, dates, and times that appear to lend credibility to the claims. However, the agency emphasizes that if no such services were actually used, recipients should not make any payments.
Victims who do pay these fraudulent invoices often find it nearly impossible to recover their funds, as the payments are usually directed to addresses in the Czech Republic. The agency has noted that the letters frequently reference a "service for adults" or explicitly mention "phone sex services" alongside vague descriptions of the supposed transactions.
Indicators of fraud include formal errors within the documents, such as incomplete sender addresses or generic greetings like "Dear Telephone Subscriber." The agency advises caution and recommends that recipients carefully scrutinize such communications.
The fraudulent invoices typically request immediate payment of EUR90 via registered mail to a post office box in the Czech Republic or through a SEPA transfer to a Czech bank account. In many cases, additional fees, late payment charges, or other costs are tacked on, escalating the total demanded amount to as high as EUR500.
For those who wish to contest these charges, the Consumer Protection Agency offers template letters on their website. It is crucial for individuals to refrain from disclosing any personal information that the scammers may not already possess. The agency clarifies that those who did use legitimate erotic services are only liable for connection fees, which are detailed on their telephone bills.
The agency has compiled a list of companies frequently associated with these scams, most of which are registered in the Czech Republic and continue to add new names. Some of the notable names include Allround, Arvex, Avotex, Comera, Coval, Easycom, Innova Inkasso, Kawora, Madac, Mediascape, Mexcom, Novacall, Payvox Forderungsmanagement, Phonema, Repay, Revast, Tecom, Telesmart, Telpay, Telstar, Tework, and Werso.
