Surge in Cocaine Availability in Germany, Warns BKA Chief

Tue 22nd Apr, 2025

The head of Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) has raised alarms about a significant increase in the availability of cocaine across the country. Holger Münch, the BKA president, reported that the rise in cocaine usage is largely due to a shift in focus from North America to Europe, where the market is becoming increasingly saturated.

Münch emphasized that the distribution of cocaine in Germany is expanding rapidly, highlighting the concerns surrounding this trend. In addition to cocaine, he noted that the heroin market is also undergoing notable changes. The recent actions by the Taliban to restrict opium production in Afghanistan have led to a potential decrease in heroin availability. This decline poses risks for users, as it may result in heroin being mixed with synthetic opioids, which could increase the danger for consumers.

According to the latest police crime statistics for 2024, incidents related to heroin have decreased. However, there has been a nearly five percent rise in cocaine-related offenses, as well as a more pronounced increase in the use of LSD and other new synthetic drugs.

Authorities continue to monitor these developments closely, working to address the implications of this rising trend in drug use and the associated risks to public health and safety.
