Wed 2nd Jul, 2025

The Bundeswehr is set to welcome a new Inspector General, Christian Freuding, who is not only a seasoned military leader but also a prominent figure on YouTube, known for his educational videos regarding the Ukraine conflict. This appointment marks a notable transition in the leadership of the German army.

Freuding is expected to succeed Generalleutnant Alfons Mais as the head of the Land Forces in September. The Defense Ministry acknowledged Mais's dedication and effort in recent years, particularly highlighting his role in the successful establishment of the German brigade in Lithuania. Freuding is anticipated to continue this trajectory while bringing additional momentum and change to the army's initiatives, leveraging his extensive military, administrative, and political experience.

Having joined the Bundeswehr in 1990, Freuding has built an impressive career. The 53-year-old family man began his military journey as a tank reconnaissance specialist. He holds a doctorate in political science and graduated top of his class from the General Staff course. His experience includes international deployments, where he served as a company commander in Bosnia and Herzegovina and led a civil-military cooperation team in Afghanistan. He has also commanded the 9th Armored Brigade in Munster.

Freuding has spent considerable time in high-ranking positions within the Defense Ministry, serving as an adjutant under former Minister Ursula von der Leyen and as an advisor to Minister Christine Lambrecht. Currently, he holds a significant role as the head of the newly established Planning and Command Staff, coordinating weapon support for Ukraine through his leadership of the Ukraine Special Staff.

Known for his calm demeanor and measured approach, Freuding contrasts sharply with his predecessor, General Mais, who has gained public attention through his outspoken criticism regarding the state of the Bundeswehr. In discussions about future priorities for the army, Mais emphasized the need for advancing digital capabilities, enhancing air and drone defense, and improving the army's capacity for effective long-range operations using artillery and drones. These challenges will fall to Freuding as he aims to enhance the army's readiness for future conflicts.
