Chinese Workers Rescued from Inhumane Conditions in Brazil
In a recent intervention, Brazilian authorities reported the rescue of over 160 Chinese workers who were reportedly subjected to inhumane working conditions while engaged in the construction of a factory for the Chinese automotive company BYD, located in Camacari, Bahia state.
According to Brazil's Public Works Ministry, the alarming situation of these workers has been under investigation since November. The ministry revealed that the laborers faced severe neglect, living in substandard accommodations that lacked basic amenities. Many were forced to sleep on beds without mattresses, and personal belongings were stored haphazardly alongside food supplies. A significant concern was also raised regarding sanitation, as there was only one toilet available for every 31 workers.
Investigators suspect that the situation involved forced labor, as workers' passports were confiscated, and a substantial portion--60%--of their salaries was withheld. Additionally, those who attempted to leave their jobs were threatened with the obligation to repay the company for their flight expenses from China, further complicating their plight.
In response to these revelations, BYD's Brazilian subsidiary has publicly condemned the actions of its contractor, Jinjiang Construction Brazil, and has terminated its relationship with the firm. The company stated that it is taking the situation seriously and is evaluating further measures to ensure compliance with Brazilian labor laws and the preservation of human dignity.
To address the immediate needs of the affected workers, BYD has arranged for their temporary accommodation in local hotels, ensuring they are no longer subjected to the harmful conditions they previously endured.
This incident highlights the ongoing issues related to labor rights and working conditions in various sectors, particularly for foreign workers in Brazil. It underscores the importance of regulatory oversight and the responsibility of companies to uphold ethical labor practices within their operations and supply chains.
