In a shocking incident reported from Oviedo, Spain, local authorities rescued three children who had been kept confined at home by their German parents since December 2021. The children, comprising eight-year-old twins and a ten-year-old boy, were discovered living under appalling conditions in a house that had become completely cluttered and unsanitary.
The alarming situation came to light when a concerned neighbor noticed that the children had not been attending school and subsequently alerted the police. Upon investigation, the authorities found that these children had not stepped outside their home at all during the isolation period, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reports indicate that the children were made to wear diapers and face masks continuously, further illustrating their extreme isolation. They had been cut off from any form of interaction with the outside world, including a lack of access to outdoor spaces such as the garden. Inside the house, they were reportedly forced to sleep in cribs, reinforcing the disturbing nature of their confinement.
When the police intervened, the children were visibly relieved and overwhelmed by their newfound freedom. One of the officers recounted how the children reacted upon being brought outside, taking deep breaths as if they had never experienced fresh air before. This reaction starkly highlights the severity of their isolation.
The parents were taken into custody by the police, who described the condition of the residence as akin to a 'horror house.' The local media has reported that the family's history and the reasons behind such drastic measures by the parents remain unclear. It is known that the mother holds dual German and U.S. citizenship, but further details regarding their background have not yet been disclosed.
This incident raises significant concerns about child welfare and the extreme measures that some individuals may take during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Authorities are now focused on ensuring the children receive the necessary care and support to recover from their traumatic experience.
