Charges Filed Against Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro

Wed 19th Feb, 2025

The Brazilian Attorney General's Office has officially charged former President Jair Bolsonaro with attempting a coup following his defeat in the 2022 elections. This development comes after nearly two years of investigations conducted by federal authorities, who believe Bolsonaro conspired with allies to undermine the democratic process and maintain power.

The charges were made public on Tuesday evening, with the Attorney General's Office confirming that Bolsonaro, who held office from 2019 to 2022, is accused of being involved in a criminal organization aimed at orchestrating a coup against the newly elected President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was inaugurated in January 2023.

Investigators assert that Bolsonaro's efforts culminated in the January 8, 2023, attack on key government buildings in Brasília by his supporters, who rejected Lula's electoral victory. These supporters invaded the Congress, the Presidential Palace, and the Supreme Court, causing extensive damage.

In total, charges have been filed against 34 other individuals alongside Bolsonaro, and the Supreme Court will need to evaluate the evidence before proceeding with formal legal action. If the Supreme Court accepts the charges, Bolsonaro will face a trial.

According to prosecutors, Bolsonaro allegedly coordinated his actions with various accomplices in a structured manner, forming distinct groups responsible for spreading disinformation, attacking the electoral system, and inciting military action to facilitate the coup.

Among those charged alongside Bolsonaro are key figures from his administration, including former Defense Minister Braga Netto and Augusto Heleno, the former head of the Institutional Security Cabinet, both of whom are accused of conspiring to violently dismantle Brazil's democratic institutions.

Braga Netto was recently arrested for allegedly obstructing evidence collection related to the coup plans and is thought to have played a significant role in coordinating efforts to execute the coup, leveraging his position to influence military officers and commanders.

Bolsonaro's legal troubles extend beyond the coup allegations. He is also facing inquiries regarding the sale of luxury gifts, including jewelry and watches received during his official visits, which are suspected to have been sold for personal profit. Additionally, investigators allege that he falsified vaccination records for himself and his family during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This recent action against Bolsonaro marks a significant moment in Brazilian politics as the country continues to grapple with the aftermath of his presidency and the broader implications of the January 8 attacks.
