The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, has expressed that he has developed a positive relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump. In a recent interview, Merz revealed that following their initial meeting in Washington earlier this month, Trump reached out via text message to convey his satisfaction with their discussions. Merz noted that Trump felt a mutual understanding and rapport had been established between them.

Merz and Trump met at the G7 summit in Canada shortly after their initial encounter and subsequently at the NATO summit in The Hague. During the NATO summit, Merz emphasized Trump's engagement, stating that the U.S. President listened attentively and was open to different perspectives. He remarked that Trump showed a willingness to engage in dialogue and seek out insights from others.

When asked about a controversial message sent by NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte to Trump, which some perceived as overly deferential, Merz refrained from commenting directly. He maintained that his communication style is straightforward and pragmatic.

Addressing concerns about the NATO summit being focused on avoiding any negative incidents with Trump, Merz firmly stated that the alliance does not aim to maintain a facade. He reiterated that the European nations are committed to increasing their defense spending for their own security. He noted that engaging positively with Trump was a demonstration of solidarity, emphasizing that Europe would act with confidence rather than subservience.

Reflecting on Trump's evolving stance towards Russia, particularly regarding President Putin's aggression in Ukraine, Merz commented that the U.S. leader appears to be adopting a more critical view. He pointed out that there is a significant consensus in Europe regarding the conflict, suggesting that Trump is aligning more closely with this perspective.

On the topic of potential new sanctions against Russia, Merz acknowledged the economic ramifications that such measures could have on the U.S. economy. He mentioned ongoing discussions within the U.S. Senate regarding sanctions, which would ultimately require presidential approval. Merz expressed his intention to work towards synchronizing the European Union and the United States in imposing stricter sanctions against Russia.

Moreover, Merz has no immediate plans to engage in direct communication with President Putin. He referenced the recent escalations in violence following conversations between his predecessor and Putin, highlighting the adverse consequences of such dialogues. Merz indicated that he would refrain from initiating contact with the Russian leader due to the troubling outcomes of previous discussions.
