CDU Politician Proposes Strand Olympics for Youth at the Baltic Sea

Kiel - A politically and athletically inspired summer initiative aimed at Europe's youth along the coast is being spearheaded by Kristina Herbst, the Landtag President of Schleswig-Holstein. She is set to assume the role of chair of the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC), a coalition of nearly all Baltic Sea nations' parliaments, for one year.

Her ambitious proposal suggests that each summer, young individuals aged 13 and older from member states convene for athletic competitions along the scenic beaches of the Baltic Sea. Locations such as Kiel, Tallinn (Estonia), Warnemünde (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), and Helsinki (Finland) would serve as the backdrop for these exciting events.

A key objective of this initiative is to reinforce solidarity among young people in the face of aggression, notably in light of the ongoing conflict instigated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Herbst has emphasized the importance of sharpening the awareness of the younger generation, encouraging them to collectively uphold democratic values. She noted that principles such as fairness, respect, and adherence to rules are essential tenets that can be instilled through competitive sports.

In her inaugural address, Herbst highlighted the potential for the Baltic region to provide diverse sporting opportunities in aquatic environments. Her vision for a united, peaceful, and democratic Europe is firmly rooted in this initiative. She described the concept as an ideal blend of sport, sunshine, and the camaraderie of peers. While the idea is still in its infancy, Herbst expressed her intention to engage schools and sports clubs for participation. Furthermore, she suggested that political discussions on vital topics such as democracy and environmental protection could also be integrated into the events.

Potential sports to be included in these competitions could range from sailing, rowing, beach volleyball to beach soccer. Notably, coastal rowing, specifically the beach sprint discipline, will be featured in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, making it a viable option for inclusion.

The BSPC encompasses a variety of national legislative bodies, including the German Bundestag, the Folketing (Denmark), Saeima (Latvia), Seimas (Lithuania), Storting (Norway), and the Polish Parliament. Regional parliaments, such as the Hamburg Parliament, are also represented. Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in 2022, Russian representatives have been suspended from participating in the conference.
