Mon 18th Aug, 2025

The Berlin Abgeordnetenhaus faces a significant change as Christian Gräff, a prominent member of the CDU and a well-known expert in economic matters, has announced his resignation from the parliament, effective September 30. This decision comes just a year before the upcoming elections, marking a notable shift for the party, which has maintained the largest faction in the assembly since 2023.

Gräff, who has served as a local representative from Biesdorf, has expressed his desire to pursue new opportunities after a decade of public service in various capacities. He has been a member of the Abgeordnetenhaus since 2016 and previously held the position of Bezirksstadtrat in Marzahn-Hellersdorf from 2006 to 2016. His tenure in the assembly has been marked by a focus on economic issues, where he has been influential in shaping policies related to construction, urban development, and energy.

In his statement, Gräff highlighted the importance of allowing his successor ample time to acclimate to the role, indicating his intention to facilitate a smooth transition. Additionally, he noted that his recent experience as a new father has motivated him to seek a balance between personal and professional aspirations, prompting his decision to take a break before embarking on new challenges.

As the spokesperson for the CDU faction on matters of building, urban development, economy, and energy in the current legislative period, Gräff has played a crucial role in advocating for policies that support business growth and development in Berlin. His leadership within the Mittelstands- und Wirtschaftsunion Berlin (MIT) further underscores his commitment to promoting the interests of small and medium-sized enterprises in the region.

The CDU is now faced with the task of identifying a successor who can continue Gräff's legacy while addressing the evolving economic landscape of Berlin. As the party prepares for the forthcoming electoral cycle, the departure of a seasoned politician like Gräff may present both challenges and opportunities for the CDU as it navigates the political landscape ahead.
