The recent local elections in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) have shown a promising projection for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which is predicted to secure the highest percentage of votes. According to forecasts by Infratest dimap, the CDU is anticipated to achieve a commanding lead with 29.5 percent of the vote. This marks a substantial gain compared to the previous local election in 2020.
In a notable shift, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) is projected to become the second-largest party, capturing approximately 22.5 percent of the votes. This indicates a slight decline from its previous standing, where the SPD garnered 24.3 percent, marking its lowest historical performance at that time.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is expected to experience a remarkable increase in support, with projections indicating a rise to 16.5 percent, up from just 5.1 percent in 2020. This dramatic upsurge reflects a changing political landscape in the region.
Conversely, the Greens are predicted to face significant losses, dropping to 11.5 percent from their peak of 20 percent in the last election. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) is forecasted to receive around 3.5 percent of the votes, a decrease from 5.6 percent previously. Meanwhile, the Left Party is anticipated to perform slightly better than in 2020, with projections suggesting a vote share of 5.5 percent compared to 3.8 percent.
The local election, which drew approximately 13.7 million eligible voters, not only determines local governance but also serves as an important barometer for national political sentiment. This election is particularly significant as it is the last major vote of the year in Germany and acts as an initial evaluation of the black-red coalition government led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the CDU following the early federal elections in February.
In NRW, voters have the opportunity to influence around 20,000 mandates across 396 municipalities and 31 district councils, including the Ruhr Parliament. The elections also encompass votes for mayors and district administrators. The CDU has a sustained record of obtaining the most votes in local elections in NRW since 1999.
