Sun 14th Sep, 2025

The local elections in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) have concluded, revealing the CDU as the dominant party while the AfD has made substantial gains. According to the latest projections, the CDU has secured a notable lead as the strongest political force in the region. In contrast, the SPD and especially the Greens are facing considerable setbacks.

As the results unfolded, it became clear that the CDU achieved approximately 34.6% of the vote, slightly improving from their previous performance in the 2020 local elections, where they garnered 34.3%. The SPD followed in second place with 22.0%, a decrease of 2.3 percentage points compared to the last election. The AfD, however, emerged as a significant player by tripling its previous results, achieving 15.3% and outranking the Greens, who experienced a decline to 12.9%.

The outcome of this election serves as a critical political barometer for the current federal government led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), marking the first major test of public sentiment following the early federal elections in February.

The increase in support for the AfD has raised alarms among other political parties. NRW's Minister-President Hendrik Wüst (CDU) expressed concerns, indicating that the results warrant serious reflection, even for his own party, despite their electoral success. The AfD's rise in NRW signifies a broader trend that could impact the political landscape.

In terms of overall voter engagement, the turnout for this election was reported at 58.5%, surpassing the 51.9% recorded in 2020. This increase suggests a heightened interest in local governance among the electorate.

The leadership of the AfD has responded positively to their electoral gains. The party's state chair remarked that the election results reflect a desire among voters for a shift away from the status quo, emphasizing that local elections are not merely about municipal offices but also represent a referendum on the direction of the country.

In contrast, the SPD leaders acknowledged their disappointment in failing to halt their party's downward trajectory, while also asserting that the results were not as dire as previously anticipated. They emphasized the need for introspection and action to recover from this electoral setback.

The federal government officials, including prominent members from various parties, were actively involved in campaigning, underscoring the elections' significance at a national level. With the CDU's success, some party officials believe it could lend momentum to the governing coalition in Berlin. However, they also cautioned that the rise of far-right sentiments necessitates urgent discussions on critical issues such as immigration and social justice.

The Greens, meanwhile, expressed disappointment over their diminished support, attributing it to changing political tides that have made it more challenging for progressive issues to resonate with voters.

As the NRW local elections unfold, the results highlight a shifting political landscape that will require all parties to reassess their strategies and engagement with constituents moving forward.
