CDU Proposes Comprehensive Gun-Free Zone for Hamburg

Wed 26th Feb, 2025

Hamburg - The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has announced its ambition to declare the entire city of Hamburg a gun-free zone. This proposed initiative, spearheaded by CDU's lead candidate Dennis Thering, is part of the party's platform for the upcoming Bürgerschaft election.

In light of rising incidents involving knives and firearms, Thering emphasized that existing regulations limiting weapon possession to specific areas are insufficient. The CDU aims to transform Hamburg into the safest major city in Germany, advocating for the expansion of weapons prohibition across the entire metropolitan area.

Implementing a citywide gun ban would empower law enforcement to conduct checks on individuals without prior cause, allowing police to stop, question, and search individuals as well as inspect their belongings. Thering clarified that exceptions would be made for individuals who have legitimate reasons to carry firearms, such as police officers and licensed hunters. He expressed a commitment to immediately pursue the necessary legislative adjustments at the federal level through a Bundesrat initiative following the election.

Since becoming the first federal state to introduce designated weapons-free zones in December 2007, Hamburg has seen regulations applied in areas such as the Reeperbahn in St. Pauli and Hansaplatz in St. Georg. More recently, a comprehensive weapons ban was enacted for all public transportation and train stations across the city.

In a related incident reported at the end of January, law enforcement authorities uncovered an alarming number of weapons during a routine inspection at Hamburg's main train station. A total of 14 knives were confiscated, along with other violations identified during the operation, which involved nearly 600 individuals being searched by 60 officers over a seven-hour period.

The CDU's proposed gun-free zone is an ambitious step toward addressing public safety concerns in Hamburg, reflecting a growing recognition of the need for stricter controls on weapon possession in urban environments.
